Unusual Shades to Reinvent Your Fall Lip Wardrobe

If I were to ask you, what do you think of when you picture autumnal lipcolors? You might respond with burgundies or cranberries or terracottas or coppers or tawny brown tones. These are the first and most quintessential shades that come to my mind as well, but I've been thinking on some more unusual takes that can be just as beautiful of renditions on the bold Fall lip look.

Corals: Corals may seem the most en vogue for a pop for summer, but I would suggest not putting your bright coral lipsticks and glosses when you first feel a nip in the air. The oranginess in many a coral lip color often plays very nicely with the rusty red and brown tones in season and that we often wear during the colder month. While lipsticks that match the tones can often appear dark and heavy, corals will still harmonize with these tones but help to still add brightness and freshness to your complexion. You can play with the ratio of red to peach to pink within the coral based on your coloring. My favorite version of this on me is a coralish red, Revlon's Fire and Ice.

Grayed Mauves: Grayed mauves can be a great alternative to a beigey nude lipstick. They add the same level of mutedness to counterbalance a heavy or more graphic eye look and pair nicely with both soft and strong blush applications. If you find beiges too brown on your skintone or if they tend to turn your teeth a bit yellow-looking, a gray mauve can help you get a nude lip look of a beige but without those effects. I find these especially useful in Fall because, not only is it smokey eye season for me, but also it adds some color variety and contrast to the warmer tones in nature and that I sometimes wear during the season. Color examples of this type include my favorite lipstick of the moment-- Doll 10's Lip Rouge in So Chic-- and Maybelline's Gone Griege.

Primary Purples (and other bolds): Though a favorite of mine any time of year, berry-toned lipsticks are usually synonymous with autumn. For a slightly different take on this trend, I recommend a truly purple lipstick. My pick of the moment is Flower Beauty's Petal Pout Lipstick in Fuschia Flood (despite fuchsia being in the name, it definitely reads as true purple both on me and on many if not most other people I've seen it on), but I am definitely looking for other options in this family. A bold primary color to me is the perfect thing to juxtapose the hazier, softer colors of Fall. It delights the eye with the unexpected. To further this venture, I would also love to try a deep green or navy lipstick to sort of capture the idea of unusual color contrasts while also doing a new spin of the vampy lip trend popular during this time of year.

Lipstick is always my favorite decoration to add on my face, and I know I am not alone. I hope these suggestions give you some inspiration to add some unusual twists to your looks for the months ahead.
