Whether we want to add a bit of dewiness to freshen up our complexion or we want to be shining like a beam from outer space, highlighter is the epitome of the perfect finishing touch, adding just the right hint of specialness and glamour to any makeup look. But with all the different tones of highlighter available, it can be hard to find the one that will suit your coloring the very best. Here are some general guidlines:

Fair to Light Complexions: Paler skin tones often look best in the iciest of sheer white lights, especially if the skin is more cool-undertoned, or has a bluish base. To learn more about skin undertones and how finding yours can help you find your most flattering shades, check out my post here. Conversely, fair-to light skintones with a warmer (or more yellow or golden undertones) look great in subtle champagne highlights. As a general rule, for the most skinlike and natural finish, opt for a liquid or cream-based formula, and to pack more of a punch, you can explore powder formulas. This is apt to be true for everyone, but particularly on lighter skintones, the more prominent powder highlighters look especially dramatic as their pigments do not meld as seamlessly with the pigments of the skin.

Medium to Olive Complexions: Those with cool undertones in this range look especially great in pink, peach or rose gold highlighters while warmer tones can easily for even richer variations of these same shades and also brilliant gold and bronze highlighters. Medium and olive skintones also look great in playing with unusual tones of highlighter such as plum, lavender, and even blue as well as these colorful hues neither make them look too ashy or sallow, but instead give interesting dimension to the skin.

Deep Complexions: Cooler skintones in this category look amazing in rich plummuy highlighters and pale bronzes, and warmer tones can effortlessly pull of the richest of coppers and bright coral highlighters. Deep complexions, regardless of undertone, often have option of using most shimmering bronzers as also being their perfect highlighters and contouring products all in one to sculpt out the face. One thing to note here is that glitter particles in a fomula are likely to show up on deep skintones more prominently than any other, so whether that is something you are looking for or something that you want to avoid, keep that in mind.

For all the diverse skintones and undertones and combinations therein, there is trulymultiple ways to glow for everyone. Take these tips and experiment in finding which tones of highlighter make you shine. Go on, get your glow on!
