WEN by Chaz Dean is a line of hair and bodycare founded by master colorist and stylist Chaz Dean, who pioneered the concept of lather-free, sulfate-free haircare when the brand started in 1993. I have used nearly every product from the range and wanted to share about my favorite, the Remoist Hydrating Hair Mask.
At first glance, ReMoist seems like any other deep conditioner or hair mask, and it does everything that you would expect and hope such a treatment to do, smoothing the hair cuticle and plumping it up with moisture and leaving a silky feel. The Remoist does all of this and is the best product of its kind that I've tried for my hair.
For my fine hair, even though it is dry, it can be difficult to find a product that gives my hair the extra moisture that it craves without making it look weighed down. I think one of the secrets behind as to why the ReMoist doesn’t do this is because the ReMoist contains relatively few silicones in its formula. Silicones, while making your hair feel silky to the touch for awhile, really just coat the outside of the hair strand and actually do very little to infuse the inner parts of the hair with moisture, which is what actually promotes softer and stronger hair, as opposed to hair that feels soft on the outer strands but is actually brittle one the inside and prone to snapping and breaking. Unlike most hair masks, the Remoist also uses very little keratin or other proteins to fortify the hair shaft. According to Chaz Dean, if too much protein is added on top of the hair (when hair is protein to begin with) when hair is already damaged or dehydrated, it will do nothing but overload the hair and cause it to break down more. Instead, adding a minimal amount of extra protein to the hair treatment and surrounding it with many a luscious moisturizing and water-binding ingredients to help reconstitute the hair shaft and lock the little bits of added proteins in will create softer, stronger, and fortified hair that is resistant to breakage as a result. The ReMoist product does this beautifully, and true to its formula, I get a whole lot less breakage when I use this mask versus just washing my hair and not following up with this.
As lovely as this product has been on my hair, the real transformation for me has been what it has done for my scalp. I've talked a lot about my dry skin in several different posts for several different reasons on this blog, but this does also extends to my scalp. My scalp, just like the rest of me, under-produces oil, but still leaves me with flakes of loose dry skin that peel off when my scalp gets overstripped or is exposed to heat from a blow dryer Because of using the ReMoist, my scalp is now virtually flake-free and feels as quenched as my hair does, and there is absolutely no itchiness to it at all anymore, which used to be a bane of my existence.
The way to use the ReMoist is very freeform. You can apply it after doing whatever method and products you choose to clean your hair, and it is very compatible with other lines of haircare besides WEN You'll need about a teaspoon amount spread all over your hair and scalp and leave it on for 3-5 mins or for the duration of your shower and then rinse it out, or if you'd prefer, apply it at night before going to bed and wash it out in the morning. I have tried it both of these methods and really didn’t see an enhancement in my results for leaving it on longer. There was no detriment, just no improvement, so I choose to do the shorter method and rinse it out.
The Remoist comes in a variety of different scents available in the permanent collection. My most-used is the Fig, but there are also Sweet Almond Mint, Pomegranate, Tea Tree, Lavender, and Cucumber Aloe. I have gone through quite a lot of these different scents plus a lot of Remoists in the limited edition seasonal scents, there is not much difference in performance from formula to formula overall. If you have a wheat, nut, or gluten allergy, please use the Pomegranate formula, as the Pomegranate collection of WEN products was formulated with those concerns in mind.
Officially on the WEN Website, ChazDean.com, the ReMoist mask retails for 2 oz for $50 or 4 oz for $72. This said, buying WEN products from QVC is a great way to find a cheaper price, more units of product for the money, or more types of products in a set for lower prices, Shopping with QVC offers these kinds of deals on many beauty brands--not just WEN--, but the nature of those deals changes and can be very temporary. So if you see a price that is good for you, act quickly, knowing that they offer a free 30-day return policy for any item.
If you are looking for a solution for dry tresses or scalp, I highly recommend you give WEN by Chaz Dean's ReMoist Hydrating Hair Mask a try!
