CoverGirl is one brand that is very good at keeping a lot of their old, classic products in their line while still launching a decent amount of new releases, and I am very happy to report that the Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner has stood the test of time. At first glance, it seems a normal eye pencil, but it has many special features that make it tried and true.
For one thing, it was one of the first eye pencils I had ever seen (back in my first makeup-wearing days in middle school) that you didn't have to sharpen. Nowadays, sharpenable pencils for eye and lipliner are the minority, but what makes the Perfect Point Plus really unique is that, while you don't have to sharpen it, it is not a twist up pencil. There is actually a mechanical sharpner built in, just like a mechanical writing pencil. I think this makes it great for those who want the convenience of a self-sharpening eye pencil but who still want to have a somewhat sharp edge to the pencil to apply eyeliner. So often, twist-up liners loose their point after one or two uses, and there is no way to get that edge back, so automatically. the line is apt to be not as precise as it might be otherwise. But the mechanical sharpener of the Perfect Point Plus sharpens a small bit after every use until it runs out, so as long as you don't apply with too much pressure and accidentally snip the end off, you should be able to make a clean, controlled line every time.
If however, you prefer a liner look that's a little grungier or more lived in, the Perfect Point Plus also has a smudger tip at the top of the pencil, which makes for easy blending or diffusing of the eyeliner, perfect for a smoky eye or a more light-handed effect, depending on how much you blend. The smudger tip does build up excess product over time and is difficult to clean off. But I find the more product it collects, the more smudgy my smoky eye effect can get, so that is a positive for me.
As for the formula of the eyeliner itself it is very soft and malleable and not sticky on the lower lashline. It has never caused any eye watering or irritation. This is not a waterproof formula, nor is it the most water resistant, but for normal, everyday wear outside of allergy season, I have had little problem with it, if any at all.
The Perfect Point Plus Eyeliners, like all Cover Girl products, can be found in many grocery stores, most drugstores, Targets, and Ultas. Prices tend to vary greatly depending on where you purchase them but overall, they should cost about $4- $8 USD each. This liner now comes in nine colors as advertised on the CoverGirl website, however, it seems each store that sells the brand may not always carry every shade. Onyx (a black with a very strong blue base), Charcoal (a deep smoky gray, which is my favorite), and Espresso (a neutral-leaning warm brown), Deep Burgundy (a gray-toned reddish plum), Grey Khaki (a cool-toned grayish olive), Midnight Blue (a deep true navy), Bold Cobalt (a bright electric blue), Hunter Green (an almost-black rich green), and White Out (a neutral-toned ivory for brightening the whites of the eyes) I have owned the first three that I mentioned, Onyx, Charcoal, and Espresso, and they all have performed equally well and have never disappointed.
If you are looking for a low-cost eyeliner that you don't have to sharpen that will give you a variety of looks and be easy to use and to wear, give the Perfect Point Plus Self-Sharpening Eye Pencil a try.
