Product Review: Clinique Almost Lipstick

Out of all the sheer-toned, easy-to-wear lipsticks out there, none has remained as enduringly popular as the classic Clinique Almost Lipstick. A makeup artist and beauty maven favorite since the 80s, this formula was created to be the best of both a lipstick and a lipgloss equally combined--the pigmentation and variety of shades of a lipstick and the shine and comfort of a lipgloss. For its decades-long popularity and my personal usage, both, I can definitely say it is true to its word.

This formula is particularly good for everyday winter wear as the colors are sheer but can be built up to rich color but the formula feels very hydrating and soothing to dry lips. My favorite of the shades is the permanently-available and ever-famous Black Honey. In spite of the exceptionally dark-looking color in the tube and the word "black" being a part of its name. This is an extremely universally-flattering sheer berry red with both warm and cool undertones. If I had to choose one shade of any one lipcolor that would look equally fantastic on any complexion, this would be my pick. For many people, including myself, this shade was a wonderful "beginner's red" red lipstick as the formula is very smooth and soft to apply without being to creamy and slipping out of place or outside the lipline. And, because the color is bold but sheer, it can be easily built up or toned down with more or less layers as desired, For this reason, it is also a great day-to-night makeup shade and can be both a statement lip or a subtle yet still present, counterpart to a heavier eye look.

The lasting power of this lipstick runs an average of about four hours without eating and it will wear off after a meal, Because the formula is by its nature so sheer, however, it fades in a discreet way and is easy to reapply. With the convenient slanted tip, it really easy to reapply without a mirror too. That coupled with the sleek and compact design of the silver-tube packaging make this an easy handbag staple.

In addition to the beautiful Black Honey, the Almost Lipstick is also available in Pink Honey-- a brownish pink hue that by all appearances has the same lovely formula and finish and universal appeal as the original.

Clinique's Almost Lipstick's hype and reputation is certainly well-deserved for being both a fresh and versatile formula that I think would be appealing to virtually anyone. Whether you opt for sweet and soft newer Pink Honey shade or go for the classic workhorse red berry of Black Honey, I think you will find them an effortlessly pretty and timelessly chic romantic lip-- whether for Valentine's Day coming up or anytime at all.
