Beauty Buzz Review: Kayla Hagey YouTube Channel

Most days when I wear makeup, I tend to go for a fairly natural look—minimal base products, varying degrees of eye makeup but in mostly neutral colors, and a statement lip. Yet with Halloween being just around the corner, I am getting inspired by those who do more theatrical, stylized, or colorful makeup, whether for every day or for a costume. One person whom I admire for their skill and creativity in this realm of makeup is YouTuber Kayla Hagey. Kayla’s channel is a mix of both product reviews and first impressions of new releases and tutorials of complete makeup looks that range from the pretty and wearable to the truly fantastical.

My favorite type of video that Kayla regularly posts is her take on the classic YouTube beauty guru series, “3 Looks 1 palette”. In this series, Kayla takes an eyeshadow palette , whether it’s a trending new release or an old favorite and creates three often highly distinctive looks using just one palette. These videos truly show how to get the most variety and our money's worth out of an eye palette and how to see new possibilities in a single array of colors. It is amazing to see the number of different looks Kayla can come up with, even with the same small group of eyeshadows. Also in the series, along with all other her videos, Kayla demonstrates exciting and inventive ways to incorporate bright, bold color into one’s eye makeup. Sometimes ,the effects are surprisingly subtle and fresh while, others are much bolder and more editorial. She has greatly influenced me in ways to step out of my comfort zone with color more often.

No matter what kind of tutorial she is doing, Kayla not only demonstrates the look step by step, she also takes the time to explain the reasons for doing each step and the motions and brushes she uses for each component of the look. Though the looks she creates appear very intricate and artistic, her delivery is easy-to-follow, fun, and down to earth, even going so far as to not editing out any mistakes she might make and showing us how she corrects it or turns the mistake into something entirely new, showing her viewers how we can do the same.

Perhaps the most fun part of Kayla's channel is her character-inspired makeup looks. Especially around Halloween, the number of character look tutorials really increase.
