Few people within the beauty realm have inspired me so much this year as YouTube content creator Hannah Louise Poston. By trade, she is a writer and clothes designer, but as a passion, she is a lover of all things beauty and beauty product-related. Hannah began her YouTube beauty channel back in 2018 to document the journey of her “no-buy year", a self-imposed project in which she was not allowed to purchase any new makeup, skincare, clothing, or homewares for an entire year. During that time, she filmed a vast array a videos still available to watch covering rediscovered favorites from her collection, reviews on the products she used up, tutorials, and most importantly, videos candidly speaking about her experience in what it was like to stop shopping and pursue a life enjoying beauty but not being so focused acquiring of new things. In 2019, Hannah continued her YouTube channel by filming her experience in being on a beauty budget and still managing that love of makeup and aesthetics while not spending too much money or being preoccupied with shopping.
Hannah’s channel has really encouraged me to look inward about what motivates me when I shop and to create healthier and more conscious spending habits. She gives wonderful insight as to how she has grown to appreciate having, as she often puts it, "fewer, nicer things", and has become more discerning over time in both whittling down her existing beauty collection and in deciding what new items (if any) she adds to it. I find her to be very forthcoming and introspective in all that she reveals about her the items in her beauty collection, both new and old and her thoughts on the allure of beauty products overall and becoming a more conscious consumer.
One of my favorite types of videos she has done is "Corporate Ethics" series in which she details the various social and ecological impacts of the brands she has chosen to purchase from in a particular month both in beauty as well as fashion. Also, being an owner of a small business herself, strives to make her channel a platform to talk about smaller, more independent beauty and fashion companies that may or may not get a lot of mention in the press or on social media. You can watch a video back from this past Holiday season where she spotlights some of her favorite indie brand discoveries here.
For the year of 2020, Hannah is taking the concept of having "fewer, nicer" things in a new direction by documenting a new project in which she means to have few beauty and fashion items in her possession by the end of the year while still also continuing to buy and try new products and items as she wills or as brands may send things to her for consideration for review on her YouTube channel. This project promises to be an ongoing examination of curation of how new exciting things will stack up against old favorites and the diligence it sometimes takes to use what you have before becoming so caught up in the allure of the "latest and greatest"
Whether you are looking for a bit of inspiration for starting a no-buy year or beauty budget project of your own for 2020 or if you simply just like to hear someone talk about beauty and the love a makeup with a fresh and insightful perspective, I highly recommend checking out Hannah’s channel.
