With Valentine's Day coming up soon, we all may be searching for ways to get our extra-special glam on for the occasion. With that, especially nowadays, more and more people are looking for ways to do things they might normally do in public at home. This includes taking advantage of the plethora of spa and dermatologist-office inspired products and tools that enable the consumer to do the same (or almost the same) procedures in the comfort of their own home and often at a much more cost effective rate over time. However, there are some definite risks and things to just keep in mind in trying to ape these treatments yourself.

At-Home Versions Of Spa Treatments Are Less Powerful Than Professional-Grade (and they should be): This is not only a reminder of adjusting expectations of the results we receive from our at-home peels or infrared light devices or waxes, but it also is a reminder to follow the instructions on the product being used verbatim. It can be tempting to want to go all-out with a product, especially if you’re experiencing less of a result from what you’re used to from a professional equivalent. But dermatologists are trained and licensed not only in using devices and products even more powerful and potent in the skin than what you likely have access to, but also in the knowledge of how much a skin can take at a time of one thing and how each skin is different and how to assess it for irritation that a layperson may miss. Therefore, it Is easier to keep your skin from being taken too far, too fast. So it is important that even with home-use products that slow and steady wins the race and following instructions is critical even when you feel like you want a more instant or more stunning results.

Sanitation is Key: Of course, we expect all things to be clean and sterilized between clients at the spa or medical office. But sanitizing your own spa-at-home supplies is just as important. It can be easy to forget when using your facial tools just in yourself, but you never want to run the risk of excess bacterial growth being placed on or in your skin. There is particular concern with this when it comes to facial shaving or dermaplanning where accidental cuts and bleeding for sure can happen and bacteria hen can leach. But no matter the process or tool being implemented, be sure to wip everything down with alcohol or hot water thoroughly between uses.

Above All, Listen To Your Skin; This very much ties in with the first point, but, just as with testing a new skincare product, paying very close attention to your skin for any signs of discomfort or stress as you go about do-it-yourself treatments. Any sign of redness or discomfort, heat building up in your system, should be watched closely. And if things persist, or if they are severe at the outset, please stop immediately. Continuing on in spite of these types of signals from your body could mean long lasting or potentially permanent damage to your skin the ways of scarring, peeling, or hyperpigmentation induced by too much treatment or the wrong method or the wrong type of treatment altogether. Remember. No amount of beauty goals is worth sacrificing the overall health of your skin or perhaps your health in general.

Doing your own dermatological treatments can be a great way to save yourself trips out and also potentially time and money. It is just important to be mindful and careful every step of the way to in sure best and most healthy skin for life!
